"Active since 2009, Shibalba bring their first full ritual expression to the halls of Malignant. It’s a tapestry of richly detailed and layered sounds that emanate from candlelit chambers and underground passages, and an intoxicating and majestic homage to the darkest of arts. Previous work must be noted and recognized, but it is with Samsara that Shibalba’s vision is fully realized. "SHIBALBA ist ein weiteres Projekt bei dem die Protagonisten eigentlich aus dem Black Metal kommen, die aber auch ihren Hang zu düsteren, atmosphärischen Klängen ausleben wollen. Im Fall von SHIBALBA landet man bei einer düsteren und mystischen Form von Dark oder Ritual Ambient, die es ohne Frage in sich hat. „Samsara“ ist aber kein Debüt-Album, da das griechische Projekt bereits 2010 ein Album unter das Volk gebracht hat. Danach folgten einige Splitveröffentlichungen, wobei gerade die 2014er Zusammenarbeit mit u.a. ARDITI und PUISSANCE bei „Pylons Of The Adversary“ mit dem deutlichsten Dark Ambient/Martial Industrial Name-Dropping auffällt.

Hört man sich „Samsara“ an, dann erscheint aber gerade die Splitveröffentlichung mit PHURPA aus dem Jahr 2016 als folgerichtig, da beide einen starken Hang zum Mystischen haben und zudem gerne mit Gongs, Glocken u.ä. Utensilien arbeiten. Will man die Soundlandschaft von „Samsara“ beschreiben, dann bleibt zunächst das Bild eines mystischen Rituals, wobei das Klangbild ein breites und auch durchaus wuchtiges und abwechslungsreiches ist. Ein tieftönendes Fundament, das immer wieder wolkig mäandert, hypnotische Trommelschläge, hier und da weiblicher Gesang oder Chöre, mantraartige Vocals und dazu Gongs, Glocken und metallische Geräusche – alles in allem also eine düstere Messe. Wer sich Artworks oder Bilder, die auch mal schamanistische Anklänge haben, der Band zu Gemüte führt bzw. Live-Auftritte, bei denen in Roben quasi ein Ritual zelebriert wird, hat so ,eine perfekt stimmige Atmosphäre vor Augen. Und genau das ist das Pfund, mit dem diese Veröffentlichung wuchert. Auch wenn das Rad musikalisch sicher nicht neu erfunden wird, passt hier ohne Frage vieles zusammen, wobei gerade die düstere, geheimnisvolle Atmosphäre zu packen vermag." [Tony F. für nonpop.de]
