"ACR 1029: CD-R in plastic case and transparent paper sleeve

Hamburg-based sound artist Stefan Funck’s first album on Attenuation Circuit is one single hour-long track of ever-flowing, yet infinitely varied sonic becoming. Funck combines slowly shifting layers of microtonal sounds with all sorts of field recordings and found sounds. The impression is of travelling very slowly by boat on a canal and watching (in this case, listening to) the changes in the landscape going by.
If drone music is about flow, then this is a perfect example, but the real beauty of this work is in the way Funck balances the concrete and the abstract sides of ambient and found sounds. While his field recordings create a sense of space, they are never so recognisable as to limit the listener’s imagination by giving a fixed point of reference. On the other hand, some of the found sounds are clearly recognisable as, for example, the sound of a metal spring or ping-pong balls, but they are combined in a “surreal” way that never makes them purely anecdotal, while the recognisability gives them a more ‘tangible’ feel, a certain closeness to the listener. In the course of this long composition, which manages the considerable feat of never feeling lengthy at all, there is a wide range of affective facets from calming to threateningly noisy, but Funck manages to handle all of these diverse aspects without succumbing to new-age or ‘transgressive’ gestures."
