"Manche nennen ihn einen Perfektionisten. Andere wiederum bezeichnen GEOFF BARROW als arbeitswütig. Wahrscheinlich stimmt beides. Denn wie sonst ist es zu erklären, dass PORTISHEAD in 15 Jahren Existenz gerade mal drei Alben an den Start gebracht haben? Von daher ist es gut, das sich Geoff und seine neue Band BEAK> ein paar Regeln auferlegt haben, um ihr selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum ans Licht der Öffentlichkeit zu bringen. Im Januar dieses Jahres von Geoff Barrow und zwei Musikerkollegen aus Bristol, Billy Fuller und Matt Williams, gegründet, wird das Debütalbum von BEAK> bereits am 23. Oktober auf Barrows eigenem Label Invada Records erscheinen. Eine neue persönliche Bestzeit im nach-olympischen Jahr. Wie Barrow das bewerkstelligt hat nachdem er für das letzte PORTISHEAD Album mehr als ein Jahrzehnt gebraucht hat? Er hat sich selbst dazu getrieben. ,Die gesamte Musik wurde live in einem Raum aufgenommen - ohne Overdubs oder Korrekturen. Alle Songs wurden dabei in einer 12 Tage währenden Session in den SOA Studios in Bristol eingespielt. " It's tough to ignore talk of a 'Portishead side project', and
it's even tougher to imagine what that project might sound like.
Thankfully no need to wonder, it's called Beak> (and yeah, that little
beak shape is part of the name), and it's a trio fronted by Portishead
mastermind Geoff Barrow, but don't be expecting Portishead 2, there
are some similarities, but it's mostly tone and vibe, the music is
something else entirely, more krautrock, minimal, space-y, hints of
Stereolab (which is basically krautrock when you think about it).
Recorded live, with no overdubs, the arrangements were created using
edits, so one can imagine these guys jamming out on single parts, and
then later chopping them up and assembling them into songs. Which
helps explain why the sound of Beak> is so hypnotic and looped and
cyclical sounding. Stereolab obviously, but also Circle, Cave, a
definite hypnorock / krautrock thing going on. The drumming super
simple and motorik, the bass driving the whole thing, and the synths
offering up the melody, usually locking into whirling swirling loops
over the top. The band get into long stretches of hushed almost
nothing, whispery drifts of softly pulsing drone, but invariably the
shift gears and launch into another loping hypnotic dubby rhythm, and
with all this talk of rhythm, you can bet there are lots of moments
that reminds us of This Heat, which is NEVER a bad thing. There are
vocals too, but they're minimal, and are often in the background,
wordless croons, adding just another layer of texture to the
proceedings. Fourtet, Tortoise, Add N To (X), Fridge, Necks, even some
of the modern spacerock stuff like Wooden Shjips, that sort of
endlessly looping dronerock, Beak> would definitely hit the spot if
you dig any or all of that." [Aquarius Records]

"So ganz von Null startet man nie. Auch wenn Geoff Barlow und seine Mannen sich “strict guideline” für das Aufnhame- und Entstehungsverfahren der Songs des selbstbetitelten Debuts auferlegen, so sind doch Elemente aus dem anderen Universum – Portishead – hängen gblieben. Da ist zufürderst eine psychedelische Grundstimmung, ein säuregetränktes Gefühl, welches noch dem krudesten Experiment von Beak anhaftet. Dann kommt es zu ausgedehnten und wie Spinnfäden sich in die Gesamtarrangements hereinziehenden Gitarren-Freak Outs. Dies kennen wir zumindest von der Live-Variante des Mutterschiffs. Sicher neu und auch passabel angebracht sind zwei Faktoren, die Beak mehr als künstlich beatmen: die fast schon aggressive Heaviness in Nummern wie I Know oder The Cornubia und die klare Verneigung für der rhythmischen Präzision von Neu!."
