"Das SYMBIOSIS ORCHESTRA ist kein gewöhnliches Orchester. Initiiert von Andrea Gabriele (computer, synthesizer, bass, guitar) wandelt es als elektroakustischer Zwitter immer wieder auch die Gestalt. Gabriele ist der Kern eines Kollektivs aus Iris Garrelfs (processed voice, computer), Robin Rimbaud aka Scanner (computer), Stefano Tedesco (vibraphone, feedback effects, percussion), Geoff Warren (flutes, soprano sax) und Mario Masullo (computer, drum machines). Live Journeys (karu:12) zeigt das Orchester meist live in wechselnden Trio-, Quartett- und Quintettbesetzungen, wobei auch mal ein Geiger, Trompeter und Pianist in den Kreis aufgenommen werden. Tedesco, bekannt von Strings of Consciousness, gibt dem ambienten Dröhnen und Wallen meist eine rhythmische Binnenstruktur, eine ethnisch-rituelle Komponente, auch wenn sich das Ganze in einem synthetischen Niemandsland der Phantasie abspielt. Wer je mit Jah Wobble durch 30 Hertz-Sphären pulsiert ist, dem sind freilich solche Zonen nicht unvertraut. Die schwebende, auch mal neckische, immer wortlose Vokalisation von Garrelfs gibt diesem Fantasia etwas Elfisches, und durchwegs unterstützt Computersimulation als Wonderbra den Appeal eines ‚gewissen Etwas‘, das den Wanderer ins Nebulöse lockt. Lediglich das letzte Stück hat pulsminimalistichen Charakter, ansonsten setzt das Ensemble auf ‚frei schwebende‘ Transparenz und Harmonie." Created in 2005 by Italian sound artist Andrea Gabriele (Pirandèlo, Mou, Lips!) for a festival in Pescara, this size-shifting mixed-media ensemble has been carrying on with its journey in live performance settings enhanced by Claudio Sinatti’s stage designs and visuals. If that particular dimension of the project is conspicuously absent from "Live Journeys", the project’s first full-length release, the cinematic universe of the group’s music gloriously unfolds. "Live Journeys" offers a selection of live moments taken from various performances and featuring several permutations of the ensemble in trios, quartets and quintets. Gabriele (keyboards, computer, guitar & bass) is surrounded by an all-star line-up of sound designers and performers.
